Seventh Regatta Central Catholic-St. Francis des Sales-St. John's Jesuit, Saturday, 15 May on the Maumee. This was an idea initially put forth by Chris Abele former SJJ coxswain, now coach of the relatively new SFS rowing team. We held two 1500 meter races starting just upstream of the old I-280 bridge and finishing at the Martin Luther King (nee: Cherry St) Bridge. Racing in Fours the first race - Novices - was won handily by St. Francis. Central Catholic came in second after rather tight battle with one of the two SJJ novice boats. The second race had one CCHS, one SFS, and two SJJ fours. SJJ four of Atassi, Dauson, Long, and Navarette won convincingly with CCHS 2nd, SJJ with Naveen, Santry, Nowicki, and Armbruster 3rd, and SFS four in fourth place. It was supposed to be fun - not entirely sure that it was.
The next day, Sunday, however, was a gem. Coach got a chance to attend the EARC (Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges) championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester (pronounced: Wooster), MA. That was the first EARC Championship I had been to since my senior year in college, so it was a real treat. How did it happen? The dad (Tim) of Josh Konieczny, 2009 co-captain, invited me to go with him. Time had arm-twisted his brother-in-law, who owns a twin engine Aztec Piper, to fly him to the regatta and invited me and Malek Atassi, current stroke of the Mid-West Junior Championship 8 and boatmate of Josh in last year's MidWest Championship Lightweight-4, to go along. We were at the Toledo International "Express" Airport well before 0-dark-thirty and were airborne by 0345. Got to Worcester (International Express) Airport about 0700 after a wonderfully smooth flight. Couldn't find Chris Ulrich, though I was told he was there. (Dadgummit!)
Josh's first race was at 0912 and his boat, for which he is the stroke, came in third, qualifying for the grand finale at 1425. Other boats in the heat were Navy, Cornell, MIT, Columbia, and St. Joseph's.
The grand finale had Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Navy, Princeton, and Yale. Cornell won by 0.33 of a second over Harvard. Josh's boat came in 6th. He told me after the race, that they had a less than perfect start, conditions were not the best (tail wind came up for the afternoon races), and the "coxswain steered like this" and he traced the action of a snake in the grass. The battle between Harvard, which was unbeaten going into the regatta and Cornell was classic. The lads from Ithaca held off a furious charge by the Crimson. (Dadgummit!) In fact Cornell missed setting a new course record by less than a second. Lake Quinsigamond is a really nice venue, buoyed lanes (as you expect), huge signs designating the lane numbers mounted on the bridge about 200 meters from the finish line, and lots of room for "tent city" along the shore.
