St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy has Three National Merit Semifinalists

St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy has three National Merit Semifinalists in the Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  They are seniors Dylan M. Francis, Daniyal Nadeem and Joey Veltri.  These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.  About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Dylan M. Francis is a member of the National Honors Society and has been honored with the St. John‘s Berchmans Award, the Alphonses Rodriguez Award, and the AP Scholar with Distinction Award.  He is captain of the Chess Team and the Model United Nations Team and is a member of the Creative Writing Club, Fall Play, and Debate Team.  He has rowed for the St. John’s Jesuit Crew for seven seasons.  Dylan has participated in many service opportunities, including the Guatemala Service trip to serve the dump community in Guatemala City, the Universal Health Aid screening service in northwest Ohio, Crossgates Preschool, Freedom School Maumee, Food for Thought, and Senior Independence Hospice.  Dylan is applying to the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, Northwestern University, Case Western Reserve University, Yale University, New York University, and Reed College.  He intends to study mathematics and Physics.

Daniyal Nadeem is in National Honor Society and has received the AP Scholar with Honor Award and Class Honors in all four years.  He is the captain of the Science Olympiad team and is a member of the Debate Team and Model United Nations Team.  Daniyal has competed on the St. John’s Jesuit Tennis Team all four years.  He has undertaken service opportunities through the Labre Program and the Christian Service program, in which he served at Crossgates Preschool and will continue to serve in his last year of high school.  Daniyal is applying to Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, The Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University.  He intends to pursue a pre-medical track.

Joey Veltri has been a member of the National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, Ignatian Guild Scholars, and the Ambassador Society during his time at SJJ.  He has received the Outstanding Freshman Award, the Outstanding Sophomore Award, the Rensselaer Medal for Math and Science, the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, and Class Honors every quarter.  Joey has participated in various service opportunities, including volunteering at St. Clare Commons Nursing Home for the elderly, assisting as an altar server at St. Rose Parish, and peer tutoring.  He has played for the chess team as well as the JV tennis team every year.  He also has actively participated in SJJ's spring musical since sophomore year and performed the role of Pugsley in The Addams Family last year.  Joey is applying to Purdue University, The Ohio State University, the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He intends to double-major in mathematics and computer science.
